History of the Brand

The origins of Jaguar can be traced back to 1922, with the Swallow Sidecar Company.

Since the first Jaguar car was produced in 1935, we have pushed the boundaries of what is possible, inspired by our founder, Sir William Lyons. In 1948 the iconic XK120 was launched, the ‘120’ refers to the car’s top speed, making it the world’s fastest production car.

Jaguar was the creator of the world’s first disc brake. Our history of disc brake development with Dunlop dates back to the winning 1953 Le Mans race, where Jaguar made the C-Type lighter and fitted improved disc brakes.

In 1961, Jaguar launched what became the most beautiful and iconic sports car of all time, the E-Type, which was based on the Jaguar D-Type racing car that won the 24 hours of Le Mans for 3 consecutive years beginning in 1995.

In the 1990s the Jaguar XJ220 became the world’s fastest production car, with a top speed of 213pmh, and then in 1996, the Jaguar XK was launched, featuring a revolutionary new technology – adaptive cruise control.

Coming into the 21st century, in 2008 ‘Jaguar Land Rover’ was founded as Tata Motors completed the acquisition of the brand. 2013, Jaguar revealed F-Type, the spiritual successor to the iconic E-Type, and moving into SUVs Jaguar released their first SUV the F-Pace in 2025. Come 2018, it was time for Jaguar to reveal the world’s first all-electric SUV, the I-Pace. More recently in 2020, Jaguar revealed the Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupe, the first all-electric virtual sports car, and in 2021 the brand announced its move to be all-electric by 2025.
