The Duckworth family has been synonymous with engineering since James Duckworth, a precision engineer from Sheffield, moved to Lincolnshire in 1952.

James’s son Martin, also a keen engineer, was particularly interested in motor vehicles. From the age of 12, during school holidays and at weekends, Martin worked for an MOT and servicing garage in Lincoln. In 1962 when Martin left school at 16 years old, having already moved out to the village of Ingham, he and his father James opened a village garage and engineering business.

Duckworth Motor Group now has over 150 staff members across 3 sites and continues to thrive thanks to its passion for a customer service focused attitude, an exceptional team across all retailers, encouraging and supportive management, and a wonderful, loyal customer base.

Our History

The 50s

The Duckworth family has been connected with engineering since James Duckworth, a precision engineer from Sheffield, moved to Lincolnshire in 1952.

The 60s

James’s son Martin, another keen engineer, was particularly interested in motor vehicles. From the age of 12, during school holidays and at weekends, Martin worked for a repair and servicing garage in Lincoln. In 1962 Martin left school at 16 years old. Having already moved out to the village of Ingham, Martin and his father James opened a village garage and engineering business.

The 70s

A combination of Martin’s drive and enthusiasm for the Land Rover brand and an agricultural customer base, whose main vehicle of choice for the farm was the Land Rover Defender, encouraged the affiliation with the brand. During the late 1970’s Land Rovers had started to dominate the workload of the garage.

The 80s

In 1978 Martin began writing to Land Rover hoping to obtain the official Land Rover franchise which, after a lot of hard work and persistence, ensued in 1980. A new premises was required which would be big enough to house a vehicle showroom, a workshop and parts department. A previously derelict workshop was located in Market Rasen and after a series of rebuilds and renovations it became and still is the location for the Market Rasen branch.

The 00s

Martin’s eldest son Ben joined the family business in 2002 after completing an apprenticeship with Land Rover UK, gaining an HND in Motor Manufacturing and a wealth of experience working in various departments and on a number of projects at the Land Rover factory over a period of 7 insightful years.

Present

In 2007, Ben took over as Dealer Principal and expanded the business to include a second Land Rover store in Boston, just off the A16 at Kirton. Duckworth Select in Kirton village was also opened to house prestige used vehicles and the official franchise for Isuzu in South Lincolnshire. In 2025 Omoda and Jaecoo was added to the line-up at Duckworth Select.

Martin Duckworth sadly passed away in August 2025, leaving behind a remarkable legacy, not just as the chairman of Duckworth Motor Group, but as a visionary, engineer, mentor, and friend to so many.

Martin’s unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and customer care built more than just a successful business; he built a family, a community, and a reputation that endures to this day.

He was a pioneer, a relentless advocate for quality, and a man who genuinely cared about every member of the team and every customer who walked through our doors.
