Diesel Emissions: Jaguar Land Rover ‘Among The Best In Europe’

Jaguar Land Rover recently became the first automaker to test its cars with the AIR Quality Index, the results of which demonstrated the brand’s diesel engines have some of the lowest NOx emissions of any car on sale today.

Have you been following the debate about diesel and its place on our roads? Not sure what decision to make regarding your next vehicle? This guide is here to answer your questions and resolve any misconceptions surrounding diesel engines.

Read below to ensure you make an informed decision when deciding on your next Jaguar or Land Rover.

What is the AIR Quality Index?

The AIR Index is a new independent emissions test that measures the NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions for each individual model tested. Using a standardised procedure, it puts vehicles through various tests before assigning it a grade.

To ensure a fair and accurate grade, the AIR Quality Index tests at least two cars in towns and cities with a Portable Emissions Measurement System (PEMS). The completion of the test must include at least five 10km trips over three separate journeys for each vehicle.

Jaguar Land Rover is making huge strides in sustainability, becoming the first car maker to puts its vehicles to the test. To remain entirely transparent, the brand is now displaying the AIR Index rating of each Jaguar Land Rover model on its website.

What AIR Quality Index did the Jaguar Land Rover models get?

So far, four Jaguar Land Rover models have been put to the AIR Test:

  1. 2019 Jaguar E-PACE HSE 2.0l 180hp
  2. 2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport 2.0l 180hp
  3. 2019 Range Rover Evoque TD4 2.0l 180hp
  4. 2018 Land Rover Discovery 3.0 TD6 HSE

All four models received an ‘A’, otherwise known as the best possible AIR Index rating. This means that each vehicle emits between 0-80mg/km of NOx.

What are NOX Emissions?

Nitrogen oxide emissions are a factor in poor air quality in built-up, urban areas with high motor traffic. However, the latest Jaguar Land Rover results show the huge advancements made in NOx emissions in recent years. To put this into perspective, it’s worth considering that, in 2001, the EU3 limit for such emissions stood at 500mg/km for diesel cars. 18 years later, the E-PACE 2.0D 180PS emits as little as 14mg/km.

The AIR NOx emissions measurements of the four vehicles tested can be found below:

  1. 2019 Jaguar E-PACE HSE 2.0l 180hp – 14mg/km
  2. 2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport 2.0l 180hp – 34mg/km
  3. 2019 Range Rover Evoque TD4 2.0l 180hp – 17mg/km
  4. 2018 Land Rover Discovery 3.0 TD6 HSE – 33mg/km

What does the AIR Index say about Jaguar Land Rover?

Massimo Fedeli, co-founder and operations director at Allow Independent Road-testing (AIR), said: “Jaguar Land Rover asked us to put a range of their new diesel cars to the test, and the evidence shows that their latest engines are extremely clean, with all of the four models tested achieving the AIR Index A rating.

“One of the key things to observe from this set of AIR Index ratings is that perceptions of the emissions produced by particular vehicle types, such as SUVs, can be very misleading. In fact, Jaguar’s E-PACE and Land Rover’s Range Rover Evoque are amongst the cleanest cars on sale of any type”.

Breaking the Mould

With Jaguar Land Rover vehicles exceeding Euro 6 emissions limits ahead of schedule, this is yet another demonstration of the brand’s ability and continued willingness to innovate and evolve.

Land Rover and Jaguar vehicles have always broken the mould when it comes to their classes, and the fact that the new SUVs are more environmentally friendly than most of the smaller vehicles on the market is a fantastic achievement.

If you are looking for a diesel vehicle that is capable, luxurious and thrilling to drive, yet with low emissions and high safety ratings, these latest tests are further proof that Jaguar Land Rover is the best option.
