How To Beat The April 2020 VED Rates/Road Tax Increase

How To Beat The April 2020 VED Rates/Road Tax Increase

Why The Increase?

The likelihood of a road tax increase stems from the upcoming introduction of the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP).

The WLTP replaces the previous testing procedure known as the NEDC and is a more accurate way of examining a vehicle’s CO2 emissions.

Road tax bands are calculated “on either engine size or fuel type and CO2 emissions,” according to gov.uk, and April 2020’s new WLTP procedure is a more accurate means of measuring this.

How WLTP Will Affect Road Tax Prices

Producing more accurate measurements of emissions, the WLTP will cause an increase in road tax (VED) rates for many vehicles purchased after its introduction on 1st April 2020.

Its predecessor, the NEDC, was introduced in 1990, and has, therefore, become outdated in its ability to measure emissions accurately. This has meant vehicles purchased during its tenure could have been paying less road tax than their actual emissions warrant in terms of government guidelines.

Will Land Rover Vehicles Be Affected By Road Tax Increases?

The question on everyone’s lips: ‘will the vehicle I want require an increased road tax fee?'

Land Rover has released its estimations on which vehicles in its extensive range will be affected by the new road tax increase from April 1st 2020:

  • Range Rover – VED increase of up to £535
  • Range Rover Sport – VED increase of up to £535
  • Range Rover Velar – VED increase of up to £960
  • Range Rover Evoque – VED increase of up to £750
  • Land Rover Discovery – VED increase of up to £855
  • Land Rover Discovery Sport – VED increase of up to £960

Which Jaguar Vehicles Will Be Affected?

As is the case with Land Rover, those hoping to buy a Jaguar vehicle could face paying an extra £960 worth of road tax when purchasing after 1st April 2020.

Here are Jaguar’s VED estimations for this year’s increase:

  • Jaguar E-PACE – VED increase of up to £960
  • Jaguar F-PACE – VED increase of up to £960
  • Jaguar F-TYPE – VED increase of up to £425
  • Jaguar XE – VED increase of up to £750
  • Jaguar XF Saloon – VED increase of up to £425
  • Jaguar XF Sportbrake – VED increase of up to £750

You may notice an important absentee from the above list: the award-winning I-PACE, Jaguar’s first all-electric SUV. That’s because the thrilling EV has zero emissions, meaning it is entirely exempt from road tax. This is just one of many electric car incentives the I-PACE qualifies for.
